“It’s always about love. It’s boring,” says a character in this whimsical romance. Contrary to this, the film observes Rimbaud’s axiom that “love has to be reinvented.” Set in a school for people with sensory disabilities, the film presents infinite variations on the theme of love through a set of lovestruck characters as they orbit around each other in a series of encounters and departures. Of the film’s various threads, perhaps its most beguiling is the waltz between deaf rocker Edo and blind Fitri (Indonesian superstars Nicholas Saputra and Ayushita). While sumptuously capturing in inspired ways the evental character of sensuous attraction, with this pair’s trajectory, the film further discloses love under its bittersweet, though transcendent illusory aspect, as Edo mischievously poses as a ghost doctor to seduce Fitri.

About SEA of Sadness
2- 28 Aug | Oldham Theatre

With more than 20 years’ experience working on Southeast Asian cinema as a senior programmer at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Gertjan Zuilhof has developed close relationships with many of the region’s filmmakers and affinities with their works. The SEA of Sadness programme is a culmination of his curatorial experience. Previously presented at the 2018 edition of the Taiwan International Documentary Festival, the programme is now being presented for the first time in Southeast Asia at the Asian Film Archive.

The films selected for the programme include classic masterpieces as well as contemporary work from promising young directors; both feature-length films and shorts; and works of all genres, ranging from “pure” documentary to fiction films and experimental videos. These films represent the high quality of original work produced in Southeast Asia over the last two decades.

The sadness indicated in the title of the programme does not mean only that the films are concerned with sadness as an emotion, but also that they are sensitive, personal, and made with genuine feeling, delving deep into the memories and hopes of the people in the countries they were made in.
